How to Revise for GCSEs and A-Levels — Techniques That Actually Work
A lot of common revision habits feel productive but don't actually work very well. Here's what the evidence on memory and learning actually says, and how to put it into practice.
Re-reading and highlighting feel like revision, but barely are. Reading your notes for the third time creates a false sense of familiarity — it feels like you know the material, because you recognise it. Recognition and recall are different skills, and exams test recall: producing the answer yourself, with nothing in front of you. If your main revision method is reading and highlighting, you're training recognition, not the skill you'll actually be tested on.
Active recall is the single most effective technique available to you. Instead of reading your notes, close them and try to write down everything you remember about the topic — then check what you missed. This feels much harder than re-reading, and that difficulty is exactly the point: the effort of retrieving information from memory is what strengthens it. Flashcards, past-paper questions, and practice quizzes are all forms of active recall. Passive reading is not.
The evidence for this is genuinely striking. In a well-known 2006 study by psychologists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, students who repeatedly re-read a passage actually felt more confident about their memory of it shortly afterwards than students who instead tested themselves on it — and in an immediate check, the re-readers even scored slightly higher (83% vs 71%). But a week later, the result flipped decisively: the group that had tested themselves recalled 61% of the material, compared to just 40% for the group who'd simply re-read it. Re-reading creates a false sense of mastery that doesn't hold up over time — testing yourself does.
Space your practice out, don't cram it into one sitting. Studying a topic for three hours straight the day before a test feels thorough, but you'll forget most of it within a couple of weeks. Studying the same total time spread across several sessions, days apart, produces far better long-term retention — even though it feels less intense in the moment.
This is one of the most extensively studied effects in psychology. A major 2006 review by Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues analysed 839 separate comparisons of spaced versus “massed” (crammed) study across 317 experiments, and consistently found spaced practice came out ahead. A later review focused specifically on real classroom learning found a reliable, moderate-to-large improvement in test performance from spacing study sessions apart rather than cramming them together — the kind of effect size that's genuinely worth restructuring your revision around.
Mix your subjects and topics up, rather than studying one thing for a long block. This is called interleaving, and it's uncomfortable at first — you don't get that feeling of “mastering” one topic before moving on. But it more closely matches how exams actually work (a mixed set of questions, not one topic at a time), and it's been shown to improve long-term understanding, not just short-term familiarity.
The numbers here are hard to ignore. In a 2010 study by Kelli Taylor and Doug Rohrer, students who practised maths problems in a mixed, interleaved order actually performed worse during practice itself than students who practised one problem type at a time — but on a test a week later, the interleaved group nearly tripled the blocked group's score (63% vs 20%). A larger, real-classroom follow-up study with nearly 800 students found the same pattern: interleaved practice produced substantially higher test scores than blocked practice, even though it felt harder and less immediately successful at the time. Struggling more in the moment while revising is often a sign the method is working, not that it's failing.
Test yourself under realistic conditions as often as you can. Past papers, timed where possible, are one of the best predictors of exam readiness — not because of the specific questions, but because they force genuine retrieval under the kind of pressure you'll actually face.
Turn hard-to-remember facts into images and stories. Dominic O'Brien, an eight-time World Memory Champion, built his book How to Pass Exams around this idea: raw facts, dates, and lists are much easier to forget than a vivid mental picture or story built from them. His approach involves deliberately linking each thing you're trying to remember to an exaggerated, unusual, or funny image or scene — the stranger and more vivid the mental picture, the more likely it is to stick. For dates and numbers specifically, he developed a system that converts digits into people or characters with memorable actions, turning a dry sequence of numbers into a short, visual story. You don't need his exact system to benefit from the underlying idea: converting a plain fact into something visual and a little absurd genuinely does make it easier to recall under exam pressure.
Organise information visually before trying to memorise it. O'Brien is also a strong advocate of mind mapping — laying out a topic as a branching diagram from a central idea, rather than as linear notes — as a way of seeing how facts connect to each other, which in turn makes them easier to retrieve as a group rather than as isolated details.
